"Inspiring a Movement of Positive Attitudes"
Future Leaders For Peace is a non-profit organization that works with young people, primarily at middle schools around Northern California, encouraging the development of conflict management and life skills. Assemblies draw kids into a set of ten core lessons. Weekly group meetings, lead by students from local universities, focus the young students in emotional literacy and positively resolving conflicts. There is a special emphasis placed on turning positive attitudes into meaningful action.
Since 2005, Future Leaders for Peace has worked with over 11,000 young people and 2,600 adults. In 2007 and 2008, our programs were presented to almost 100 different schools. The format typically used can include up to four different programs:
Why do students need FLFP?
We teach young people the life skills they need before they can succeed in math or science. We inspire young people to become leaders by teaching a combination of life skills, emotional literacy skills, and conflict resolution skills.
How does FLFP get the message across?
We teach ten Core Lessons through a series of stories, facts, and current events. We make the lessons exciting and fun so your students can remember them and make the lessons part of their life. We bring in energetic young people to lead our program so your students can relate to their young mentors, whom we call Guides.
Conflict affects everyone. Young people face conflicts which cause internal struggles, sometimes causing them to turn to drugs, alcohol, and suicide. In other cases they turn to violence. We help by teaching young people to manage conflict, improve relationships, and reduce stress every day. Working with young leaders, we create waves of empathy that have a ripple effect on their entire community.
We work directly with youth in a variety of environments, primarily in schools. We work with them through assemblies, workshops, and student clubs. Students start by identifying concepts, discussing them, then applying them in the real world. These concepts are largely related to handling stress, examining relationships, and positive communication.
Our programs strengthen communication skills and build a sense of empathy in the classroom. We focus our discussions around personal experiences because students rarely find a chance to share their experiences with their classmates and positive role models.
Young people are the leaders of the future. We equip them with techniques to build peace in their daily lives and relationships. Through them we change the world.
